Disaster Response and CMDRR, Climate Shock-Adaptation

BTS has started its initial journey with an primary motive to support and serve the disaster-hit community people specifically in its working villages and later expanded its relief and communitybased resilience initiatives in other parts of Kultali , Patharpratima, Namkhana blocks under the Sunderban coastal areas which are ecologically fragile (disaster-prone) and economically vulnerable. Community Based Awareness to combat /reduce the risks/hazards of disaster  alongwith disaster-before weather forecasting among the coastal community are done as per need basis  as BTS has its good network with SHGs/farmer-groups or fishermen community in the project villages.

Different donors and philanthropic /humanitarian organisations like  Lutheran World Service(LWS), Palli Unnayan Samity(PUS) with supports from Caritas India alongwith our existing project partners like Asha for Education-USA, AID-USA, PPI-USA, Vibha(Help Them Grow inc)-USA and many friends of BTS  have extended their arms of co-operation to save the disaster-hit people and rehabilitate them for a longer process.

Very recent in 2009 a devastating Cyclone Aila has destroyed a large area of human habitation including their Shelters & major sources(pond and Agricultural Lands) of livelihood and existence in the delta points under the Biosphere Zone of Sunderban Tiger Reserve Forests.

BTS supported 100 huts to have repaired and 15 tubewells to repaired. Nutritional Gardening alongwith bio-farming methods are being promoted after the Cyclone Aila with an aim to reclaim the saline-infected farming lands of the poor farmers in the coastal island(K-Plot) villages of Patharpratima CD Block.

Again, as a post-flood Reconstruction/ resilience work, BTS envisages Bio-Farming with salinity-resistant farming seeds & technologies in collaboration with DRCSC & TamilnNadu Organic Farmers’ Movement(TOFM) led by Ms. Revathi being supported by Association for India’s Development (AID-USA) for a 4 months’ Pilot Project and  in later years till date.Community Seed Banks with indigenous variety, CRM(Community Resource Mapping), Nutritional /Kitchen Gardening , Grain Banks etc. are in the process among the farmers & the fishermen community towards a Sustainable Resilience Process(SRP).

BTS needs more holistic supports as the pilot is a successful one. BTS also needs project partnership on DRR(Disaster Risk Reduction) or Disaster Resilience initiatives or supports from any humanitarian / philanthropic donor institution for Climate Shocks Adaptive effortsthrough Coastal Zone Management and livelihood promotion networks among the poorest of the poor vulnerable people.
